As you probably recall, Jim Jackson is speaking Sunday at 2:30 to the friends of the library on "A Southerner Looks At Lincoln." In honor of the great man's upcoming birthday celebration, we thought you might also like to recall Abraham Lincoln's cross-cultural wit. "If you called a tail a leg, how many legs would a dog have?" Lincoln once asked his cabinet. Formulate your own answer before reading on. "Five," the secretary of state answered. "No. Four," replied Lincoln. "Calling a tail a leg doesn't make it one." Mr. Lincoln was a wise man. I know if he were alive he'd give us an application of this logical principle to Polk County politics... Perhaps, it's that if you call someone a "porky pig," it doesn't make them swine. Or perhaps it's might be said that just because you happen to label (Continued On Back Page) Printed In the THERMAL BELT of Western North Carolina TRYON. N. C. 28782 Western Steer, Nancy Wilson Churches Burglarized At Tryon Rotary The Western Steer Family Steakhouse was broken into sometime early Thursday morning. Polk County Chief Deputy Calvin Atkins said investigators believe one person was respon sible. A window was broken in the back of the building. Police could only determine that some rolls of coins were missing. An inventory will have to be completed to determine if anything else was taken, Atkins said. Atkins also reported a rash of break-ins at rural church build ings. Both Fork Creek Baptist and Midway Baptist churches reported break-ins this week, he said. A microwave oven, a stove, and a refrigerator were found missing from the fellowship hall at Fork Creek, while a stove and microwave were taken from Midway. Sheriff Boyce Carswell said a similar church break-in was reported Thursday in Ruther ford County as well. Since Tryon has already had a small degree of exposure to Soviet culture, this talk should be of great interest to Rotarians and their guests. The most attractive speaker, Nancy took her basic training at the Univ, of S.C. in Spartanburg and received a B.S. degree from Iowa State Univ, in Ames, in 1976, with a major in Physical Education. She is certified in both North and South Carolina; however, her experience has been in (Continued On Back Page) 24 Pages Today 20? Per Copy Woman Abducted From Columbus P.O. Tryon Police and the Polk County Sheriffs Department officers were searching Thurs day morning for a man who abducted a woman at knife point from the Columbus Post Office. Shirley Dohmcn, 45, of Columbus told investigators she had stopped to mail a letter at the Columbus Post Office and was surprised by a man in her back scat when she returned to her car. Dohmcn told police the man was white, with dark hair. He told her to drive, which she did following 108 from Columbus to Tryon, and onto 176. Dohmcn said she pulled her two-door Dodge over on the side of the road across from the Southern Mercerizing plant and fled. She called the police from a nearby residence. The man apparently fled as well, because he could not be found when Tryon police arrived on the scene. Polk County Chief Deputy Calvin Atkins said the matter is still under investigation. County Sports The Polk County J.V. women and men, and varsity women and men's basketball teams will host games with Mountain Heritage teams starting at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
